Virtualization overview

VMware vSphere

storage virtualization is a combination of vSphere features and APIs that provide an

abstraction layer for physical storage resources to be addressed, managed and optimized in a

virtualization deployment.

VMware vSphere is the virtualization platform that provides the foundation for the private cloud. The core

VMware vSphere components are the VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi and VMware vCenter Server for

management. vSphere 5.5, or higher includes a Single Sign-on (SSO) component.

The hypervisors are deployed in a cluster configuration and can scale up to 12 nodes per cluster. The

cluster allows dynamic allocation of resources, such as CPU, memory, and storage. The cluster also

provides workload mobility and flexibility with the use of VMware vMotion and Storage vMotion

technology.

EMC PowerPath/VE is available for path management. EMC PowerPath/VE is the default configuration

and is recommended by VCE.

VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi

VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi is an operating system that supports a virtualized environment.

The VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi runs in the second generation of the Advanced Management

Platform (AMP-2) and in the Vblock System using VMware vSphere Server Enterprise Plus.

This lightweight hypervisor requires very little space to run (less than 6 GB of storage required to install)

and has minimal management overhead.

VMware vSphere ESXi does not contain a console operating system. On the AMP-2P, the VMware

vSphere Hypervisor ESXi boots from the Cisco FlexFlash (SD card). For the Cisco UCS C-series servers,

the VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi boots from SAN through an independent FC LUN presented from

the EMC VNX storage array. The FC LUN also contains the hypervisor's scratch for persistent storage of

logs and other diagnostic files to provide stateless computing within the Vblock System. The stateless

hypervisor is not supported.
